Setting course for success

Whether they run a public company or a one-person business, every CEO sometimes wakes up in the night wondering if he or she is taking their business in the right direction. Anything that helps them to see the bigger picture can also help to bring peace of mind.

Academics and management consultants have developed some very effective tools for helping larger businesses of all kinds to understand where they are and where they could be heading. One of the most common approaches taught in business schools is called the balanced scorecard. It can be hard to apply tools like this to smaller businesses.

We find that an approach based on a coaching technique called GROW can be very effective. GROW is about setting goals, understanding the current reality, exploring options for the future and then wrapping up with a commitment to take action.
